Rarity: In this update I have attempted to classify the relative rarity of the models according to the number of times I have recorded them. Also where many different colours were made for the same model, I have shown which colours are less common and consequently more desirable.

* = 0 to 1 record * = 2 to 4 records * = 5 to 10 records * = above 10 records * = more desirable

Conway Stewart Pencils

Parts of the pencil:

Nose = tip;

Cone = tapering lower section;

Neck = between crown & barrel;

Top (= crown= Bell in CS terminology); Splayed flat-top; chef's hat = splayed top with slightly raised flat center;,

Clip = ball or diamond (ball tip or diamond shaped tip).

Suffixes to numbers: C = checking pencil used for accounts. However, for the Duro-points 2R=ring-top or ribbon, 2C=clip and 2M=mottled HR.

Patents:
      202059, 230714, 27729 and pending Canada 25845/1926
      221403, 309003, 331271, 33105, 337963 and pending
      28478, 21894

Note: David Wells informs me that the patents on Conway Stewart pencils were not taken out by Conway Stewart but, with the exception of the last one (337963), they were issued to Frederick Charles Bina and Francis Frederick Barrey, the same names as appeared on the Canadian patent. These two gentlemen were both German citizens living in London. The last pencil patent was issued to Theodore Francis Henry Barrey, presumably the son of Francis Frederick. Therefore, for pencils that are not imprinted Conway Stewart, just because the pencil has the "right" patent numbers on it is not an indication of any link with Conway Stewart. Conway Stewart simply used the design ideas of in their pencil production and thus had to include the patent numbers on the pencils. Many other manufacturers would be in the same position and thus we cannot use the pencil patent numbers as confirmation of an association with Conway Stewart.
